Those Who Wander Are Not Always Lost

Returning to the Questions That Led Me Here

Dear Fellow Explorers,

It's been a few months since my last post, and I imagine some of you might be wondering where this journey has taken me. Tolkien wrote that "not all those who wander are lost," and I've been thinking about that line a lot lately as I reflect on the winding path that's brought me to where I am today.

When I started Cyberpsychology Unplugged, I thought I knew where we were headed. A cybersecurity professional exploring the psychological dimensions of our digital lives seemed like a clear enough trajectory. But the most profound discoveries rarely happen in straight lines, do they?

The Unexpected Turn

This past year, my wandering led me somewhere I never expected: deeper into my why.

What began as a simple curiosity—how children form their first relationships with technology—has unfolded into something far larger. Months later, I find myself a Harvard research fellow exploring the intersection of early childhood education and digital dependence, the founder of New Mexico’s first technology think tank, and nearing the completion of a dissertation that reframes cybersecurity as a kind of circulatory nervous system for our digital lives.

And yet, despite the research papers, policy conversations, and boardroom debates, I return to the classroom, sitting cross-legged with fourth graders as they wrestle with the very questions I once thought belonged only to executives and scholars: How do we keep our humanity intact in digital spaces? What does empathy look like when it passes through a screen?

The surprising truth is that the children often answer with a clarity and wisdom I hadn’t anticipated—reminding me that presence and compassion don’t begin at the highest levels of thought leadership. They begin where we first learn to ask the questions.

What Hundreds of Students Taught Me

As many of you know, over the past two years, I've been conducting pilot research with K-5 students across New Mexico schools. The official metrics tell one story: 75% showed measurable improvement in understanding technology's impact on their bodies and minds. But the real discoveries happened in the spaces between the data points.

I watched a shy 8-year-old explain the difference between her "inner voice" and "outer voice" when using technology. I saw teachers rate digital citizenship education as critically important (5 out of 5) while admitting they felt only "neutral" confidence in teaching it. I listened to children request "more games" in our curriculum, not because they wanted entertainment, but because play felt like the natural language for exploring complex emotional concepts.

These weren't just research findings. They were revelations about human nature itself.

The Wandering Path of Innovation

What I discovered is that the intersection of cybersecurity and child psychology isn't a detour from my professional path—it's the destination I've been unconsciously walking toward for 25 years.

Every classified network I protected, every enterprise security system I designed, every vulnerability I patched was preparing me to understand something fundamental: The greatest security threat we face isn't technical. It's the growing gap between our technological capabilities and our emotional intelligence.

And the solution isn't in more firewalls or better encryption. It's in helping the next generation develop what I've come to call "digital empathy"—the ability to maintain authentic human connection in an increasingly mediated world.

From Research to Reality

This wandering has crystallized into something concrete: MindfulBytes.io, a research-validated platform for K-5 digital citizenship education. It's not just another curriculum. It's a new category entirely—digital emotional intelligence for the youngest members of our society.

The 2-year pilot data speaks for itself:

  • 70% of students report feeling "happy and calm" after our lessons

  • 60% retain core concepts about inner vs. outer digital voice

  • 80% request more interactive, game-based learning

  • 95% of the teachers see measurable improvements in classroom digital culture

But beyond the metrics, something deeper is happening. We're proving that children can learn to be both digitally fluent and emotionally intelligent. That technology doesn't have to diminish our humanity—it can amplify it.

The Path Forward

So where does this wandering lead next?

Yes, we’re adulting a bit with this one.

We’re seeking $750,000 in Pre-Seed funding to transform this research into a scalable platform that can reach millions of children. Not because the technology is revolutionary, but because the human need is urgent.

We're raising a generation of digital natives who've never known a world without screens. They deserve better than "screen time limits" and "stranger danger" warnings. They deserve to understand their own minds, to recognize technology's emotional impact, to maintain authentic connection in digital spaces.

This is bigger than EdTech. It's about the future of human consciousness in an algorithmic age where AI is the thing that looks at you without blinking.
